Greystones of Cedarburg, Wisconsin
Cedarburg is a city in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, just above Milwaukee's North Shore. The population was 10,908 at the 2000 census. The city is located partially within the Town of Cedarburg.
Cedarburg's beautiful setting on the banks of Cedar Creek, its unique collection of 19th century stone buildings and its enticing array of specialty shops and restaurants make it easy to see why this Southeastern Wisconsin community is so often included on lists of must-see Midwestern towns.
Situated as it is in the Northern Milwaukee region, Cedarburg is a charming small suburban community about 20 miles north of Milwaukee. The town is noted for its historic tourism industry, and prides itself on its many century-old stone and brick buildings and small businesses. The community benefits from many parks as well as a general attempt to preserve green space, even in the downtown area. There is a strong sense of civic participation and community pride.
From its beginnings as a milling center in the mid-19th century, the German enclave was pivotal to the economic, political and cultural life of Ozaukee County. Although never the county seat, Cedarburg functioned as the county's epicenter in everything else; it was the chief agricultural and economic center, the chief even then, tourist center, and a center of statewide political influence.
Cedarburg's downtown Washington Avenue area is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, with over 100 buildings considered historically significant. The adjacent Columbia Road Historic District is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places and includes nearly 130 significant structures. The main street is lined with historic buildings occupied by independent businesses. Some notable businesses included a family-owned Armbruster's
Jeweler, Hoffmann's Meat Market, The Chocolate Factory Subs and Ice Cream Parlor, several small coffee houses (including the Java House and slightly outside the town is the popular coffee chain, Starbucks), Amy's Candy Kitchen
and other candy shops and many restaurants. The Rivoli, a historic single-screen theater is located in the center of the city. The Cedar Creek Winery, and the Woolen Mill in which it is located, are a popular stop in town. Both offer tours of the historic facilities; the Mill houses a variety of small shops in addition to the winery and Creme & Crepe Cafe. Cedarburg prides itself on its picturesque setting: well-maintained historic buildings, historic landmarks, and an abundance of churches.
Throughout the year there are a number of festivals held in town, which cater to the tourists as well as residents. Some of the principal festivals include Harvest Fest, Strawberry Fest, Winter Fest, and Crazy Days. One can expect the city to be filled with crowds of people on those weekends, as the main street is converted into festival grounds. Also, "Maxwell Street Day" is held four times during the summer months. It is a flea market held on the Ozaukee County Fairgrounds, just north of downtown.
